I really struggle with this. How can we be accepting of different religious beliefs while also being accepting of LGBT+ people?
It’s all about respect – just like we can’t discriminate on the basis of religious belief, we also can’t discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. This is the law in the UK and many other places! Therefore mutual respect – not necessarily agreement – in the workplace is necessary just like any other discussion amongst colleagues where there are potentially opposed views. An LGBT+ person can respect an individuals religious belief in the workplace so long as it does not include discrimination against them, and visa versa.
